Community partners help schools and districts empower and engage a broad range of children often narrowly labeled as “English learners” – newcomers, refugees, immigrants, and children of immigrants – to support their learning and development in culturally responsive ways that go far beyond language acquisition.
This issue of VUE, under the guest editorship of Ruth M. López, was inspired by the Summer English Language Learners Enrichment Academies held across twenty "Gateway Cities" in Massachusetts. These stories illustrate the power of recognizing that students’ heritage languages and cultural backgrounds are an asset to the communities they live in.
