Chinyere Odim is a PhD Candidate in Sociology at Brown University. She earned a BA in Sociology/Anthropology and Education, with a Chinese minor, from Swarthmore College, an MS in Education from University of Pennsylvania, and an MA in Education from UC Berkeley. Chinyere is broadly interested in culture, elites, and education. Her dissertation, Wealth, Education, and Culture: Sketching a 21st Century Black Elite explores the practices of well-resourced Black people, specifically the complex set of decisions Black parents with significant economic, sociocultural, and political capital make in selecting educational opportunities and constructing a social world for their children. Utilizing interview-based and participant observational methods, as well as a Du Boisian approach, Chinyere’s work seeks to reconstitute the boundaries of who “counts” as Black and elite and consider the decision-making strategies employed by this group.
