The Future of Teacher Diversity: Recruitment and Retention during and post COVID-19

Date & Time
-

COVID-19 has had a profound effect on K-12 education. Nearly all schools across the nation closed for the remainder of the school year, while educators and administrators quickly made changes to providing instruction virtually. Many state and local governments have shifted their education priorities to respond to the rapidly evolving developments related to the current pandemic.

As we continue to deal with the effects of this pandemic, what happens to the existing and developing efforts to recruit, prepare, and support educators of color? Are the voices of teachers and aspiring teachers of color part of the conversation of “reimagining” education in a post-COVID-19 world?

Join the Equity Institute, Annenberg Institute, Latino Policy Institute, and TeachPlus RI, for a conversation on how we continue creating opportunities for educators of color as well as amplifying their voices in this critical moment.

This event took place on June 4, 2020 as a virtual session.

The Impact of Mainstream School Accountability Measures on Alternative School Enrollment

The Impact of Mainstream School Accountability Measures on Alternative School Enrollment

Alternative schools have often been excluded from education policies and research. Yet, they serve a significant proportion of students often deemed unsuccessful in mainstream schools. Although proponents of alternative schools point to the importance of providing a potential path to academic success for students who have been poorly served by mainstream schools and are at risk of dropping out, these arguments for alternative schools have been tempered by allegations that, due to the historical absence of accountability policies in the alternative sector, low-performing students are being pushed into alternative schools by mainstream schools seeking to circumvent accountability consequences. To investigate these claims, we draw from the National Center for Education Statistics’ Common Core of Data to create a 27-year panel of school level data for all public schools and explore the impact of the consequential accountability policies introduced by No Child Left Behind on alternative school enrollment.

Adam Kho, Assistant Professor of Education, University of Southern California, presented “The Impact of Mainstream School Accountability Measures on Alternative School Enrollment” at the Annenberg Institute at Brown University on April 13, 2022. The talk was part of the Annenberg Seminars on Educational Policy, a series that brings education researchers from institutions across the country to Brown to present and discuss their work.
