Annenberg Distinguished Lecture Explores How Philanthropy and State Policy Can Strengthen the Teaching Profession

Teachers are at the center of educational opportunity, but the profession faces significant workforce challenges. What will it take to invest in teachers, strengthen teaching, and build a more sustainable future for the profession?

The Annenberg Institute welcomed renowned education scholar Pamela Grossman for its fall Annenberg Distinguished Lecture, Investing in Teachers, Investing in Teaching: The Role of Philanthropy and State Policy.

Drawing on her extensive research and leadership in education, Grossman explored two important levers for supporting the teaching profession: philanthropy and state policy. The lecture examined how each can contribute to strengthening teacher preparation, supporting professional growth, and creating meaningful career pathways for educators.

Grossman is Professor of Education Emerita and former dean of the Graduate School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania. Her research focuses on teacher education and the teaching profession, including practice-based approaches to teacher preparation and professional development. She is an elected Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Educational Research Association, a member of the National Academy of Education, and former chair of the board of the Spencer Foundation.

The Annenberg Distinguished Lecture brings leading voices in education research and policy to Brown University to explore pressing questions shaping the field and the future of education.
