As schools return to in-person learning, demand for online tutoring remains high

Annenberg’s current focus areas reflect key domains where we are engaged in sustained and collaborative research. These areas span our four pillars and represent multi-year commitments to topics that reflect strong faculty interest, deep expertise, and relevance to the field. Our current focus areas—Race and Education, Educators, Postsecondary Education, and Climate and Education—highlight where we are investing to advance knowledge and practice.

Led by John B. Diamond, the Race and Education focus area develops rigorous scholarship on how race shapes students' educational experiences and outcomes, and works toward a vision of racially just education.

Led by John Papay and Nate Schwartz, the Educators focus area studies how teachers are recruited, developed, and supported — and how school systems shape their work and their students' outcomes.

SustainableED seeks to advance research at the intersection of education policy and climate change, with a focus on building knowledge that informs policy and practice and supports more resilient and sustainable education systems. This focus area reflects the growing need to understand how climate and environmental pressures are impacting students and how schools can address these challenges.

The Annenberg Institute serves as a central hub for education policy research at Brown University, dedicated to fostering an environment where students, from undergraduates to doctoral candidates, can engage in applied research training that creates measurable impact.

In this talk, Dr. Cuartas will introduce a conceptual framework for understanding how climate change, through its effects on physical environments, societies, communities, and families, can influence young children’s development.

In this talk, Dr. Davis will highlight the effects of a one-year school-based gardening, nutrition, and cooking intervention (called TX Sprouts) on dietary intake, obesity parameters, metabolic outcomes, and academic performance in over 3,000 primarily low-income and Hispanic elementary school children.

In this talk, Dr. Gehlbach will explore the unique characteristics, challenges, and opportunities that are intrinsic to Planetary Health education.

This talk will survey the literature on the impacts of various health exposures on student outcomes as well as promising evidence on the impacts of school-level interventions to reduce exposure.

The Brown Tutoring Corps (BTC) mobilizes Brown University students in local K-12 schools and other elementary and secondary programming to support youth to make academic gains, develop mindsets and skills that contribute to postsecondary readiness, and build relationships with Brown University.

The Research for Postsecondary Policy & Practice initiative is dedicated to research across all stages of postsecondary education and training, including access, persistence, completion, and transition to the workforce. By exploring these and other critical areas, we identify effective strategies, inform best practices, and advance equity in education and training.
