STRUCTURAL SUPPORTS TO PROMOTE TEACHER WELL-BEING

Teacher burnout and demoralization are pressing issues that negatively impact job satisfaction, instructional quality, and teacher retention, with the COVID-19 pandemic further exacerbating these challenges. This brief provides evidence-based strategies to combat these challenges. Key approaches include fostering trust, open communication, and collaboration between school leaders and teachers to improve morale and problem-solving. Protecting teachers’ time, prioritizing professional development, and involving teachers in decision-making about learning opportunities are essential to creating supportive environments. Long-term, schoolwide efforts focused on wellness—rather than superficial interventions—are necessary to address the root causes of teacher dissatisfaction and create sustainable change.
